Thunderbolt is a hardware interface that allows for the connection of external peripherals to a computer. It uses the same connector as Mini DisplayPort (MDP). It was released in its finished state on February 24, 2011. At first the technology was developed by Intel, but once established cooperation with Apple, Thunderbolt emerged into the market for the first time through the MacBook Pro.Thunderbolt combines PCI Express (PCIe) and DisplayPort (DP) into one serial signal alongside a DC connection for electric power, transmitted over one cable. Up to seven peripherals may be supported by one connector through various topologies.
Because of the Thunderbolt has a bi-directional nature, which means it can transmit and receive data at the same time. This is quite different from other connectivity is one way. By cutting the time to send back data, it can be said Thunderbolt works twice as fast - so it appears the statement that the Thunderbolt has a speed of up to 20Gbps.
Thanks to the combination of the two architectures which are PCIe and Display Port, Thunderbolt data transfer is very fast, up to 20Gbps - 20 times faster than USB 2.0, 12 times faster than Firewire 800, and 2 times faster than USB 3.0. In other words, you can make video capture, transfer data, and display high-definition video content quickly without much hindrance.
some features of the Thunderbolt is as follows:
Dual-channel 10 Gbps per port
Bi-directional
Dual-protocol (PCI Express * and DisplayPort *)
Compatible with existing DisplayPort devices
Daisy-chained devices
Electrical or optical cables
Low latency with highly accurate time synchronization
Uses native protocol software drivers
Power over cable for bus-powered devices
